Bioengineering provides a “bridge” connecting the study of biological systems to the development of novel solutions that address a diverse range of problems in medicine, human health, ecology, and sustainable energy. Bioengineering research at Notre Dame spans multiple scales: from the rational design of novel therapeutics at the molecular level to the study of higher-order interactions of cells within a tissue and organ context. Cutting-edge techniques are employed in the synthesis and functional characterization of novel biomolecules that will form the next-generation of advanced therapeutics. State-of-the-art cell culture technology and microscopy methods are applied to study the dynamics of cellular interactions. Computational modeling and experimental approaches are integrated to probe and investigate the systems-level properties of biological processes.
