Energy & Sustainability

Providing affordable and readily available energy and clean water for a growing planet is arguably the biggest challenges of this century.  Equally important is making energy and other chemical goods and services in an environmentally conscious fashion, which does not jeopardize opportunities and quality of life for future generations.  Energy and sustainability research at Notre Dame focuses on the development of more energy efficient gas separation and water purification technologies based on ionic liquid absorption and membrane separations.  There is also a significant computational effort in the development of better catalysts for the chemical reduction of NOx.  Exploitation of renewable resources focuses on quantum dot based solar cells, turning ‘solar paint’ into a reality and photoelectochemical reduction of CO2 to liquid fuels, as well as the development of better catalysts for processing of biomass derived chemicals.
