Materials & Nanotechnology

The properties of many materials change when their dimensional size scale approaches the nanometer level. Materials and Nanotechnology researchers at Notre Dame manipulate materials on the nanoscale to tailor properties and performance to address technological challenges in a variety of fields including catalysis, surface science, electrochemistry, and separations. Novel synthesis techniques are used to develop materials with unique properties and functionality. State-of-the art characterization tools and facilities are used to achieve molecular-level understanding of the composition and structure of advanced materials. Fabrication of advanced materials structures range from self-assembly of nanotube arrays for photocatalysis to nanometer thick polymeric membranes for advanced filtration applications.
