Notre Dame Team Develops Way to Measure and Engineer Properties of Liquid Crystal Systems

New work by the Whitmer group explores the role of “saddle-splay” elasticity in nematic liquid crystals, where global alignment of the crystal is simultaneously deformed in two directions (right) relative to its undeformed state (left).

New simulation protocols developed by a team of researchers at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Chicago enable accurate measurements of the elastic coefficients which control the behavior of liquid crystal systems.

Notre Dame’s Inaugural Gold Mass to be Celebrated Nov. 15
