Notre Dame engineers awarded 2023 NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Eleven Notre Dame engineering students and alums have been awarded 2023 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships, and one has received an honorable mention.

The fellowship program supports outstanding students (undergraduate seniors and early-career graduate students) pursuing full-time research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education.

2023 NSF Graduate Research Fellows from the College of Engineering are:

Undergraduates

  • Nolan Fey, electrical engineering (EE)
  • Colin McDonald, computer science and engineering (CSE)
  • Jackson Vyletel, chemical engineering (CBE)

Undergraduate alumni

  • Emily Doyle ‘21, molecular engineering (CBE)
  • Neila Gross ‘22, bioengineering (CBE)
  • Mark Legendre ‘21, chemical engineering (CBE)

Graduate students

  • Emily DeWolf, chemical engineering (CBE)
  • Donghyun Jeong, bioengineering (CBE)
  • Martin Kilbane, mechanical engineering (AME)
  • Bethany Oceguera, civil and environmental engineering and earth sciences (CEEES)
  • Connor Schmidt, chemical engineering (CBE)

Nicole Lukesh ‘21, biomedical engineering (CBE), received an honorable mention.

The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States.

Since the program’s beginnings in 1952, 42 recipients have gone on to become Nobel laureates, and more than 450 have become members of the National Academy of Sciences.
