Before joining the Notre Dame faculty, Prof. Degnan had a 38-year career in industrial research and development. Thirty-four of those years were spent in the central/corporate research or process research laboratories of major international petroleum companies, including Mobil and then ExxonMobil.
His principal expertise is in heterogenous catalysis. Prof. Degnan has experience in all aspects of catalysis, including fundamental scientific research, exploratory research, development, and commercialization. Prof. Degnan was involved in the development of a number of industrial catalytic processes during his career. Several of these processes were aimed at mitigating emissions.
Prof. Degnan was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2013 for contributions to novel catalytic processes for improved lubricant, fuel, and petrochemical productions.
